Strong Women Family Day

In 1926 boxer Annie Newton challenged people who said women shouldn’t box by asking if it was “half as hard work as scrubbing floors? Is it any more risky than working in a munitions factory?”

Our family event celebrates strong women and girls past and present: from Annie Newton to Nicola Adams, the courage of the suffragettes and the ‘munitionettes’, and every woman who has ever scrubbed a floor.

  • Watch a demonstration of non-contact boxing from Future M.O.L.D.S Communities
  • Learn about the suffragettes who knew jujitsu and make your own suffragette sash with Eastside Community Heritage
  • Test your strength on our strongwoman striker
  • See our new Working For Equality exhibition about women factory workers in Barking and Dagenham
  • Colour in your own Rosie The Riveter poster

Free, 11am - 3pm Sunday 9 September, Barking Town Hall Square. Facebook event.

Barking Town Square is 8 minutes walk from Barking station. Map: https://goo.gl/maps/D5zMRbXnWhn
